The New York Times Shines the Spotlight on the Treasure Island Ferry

Published on April 15, 2024

Treasure Island is making waves on both coasts. The New York Times recently spotlighted our Ferry Service in its article highlighting the nationwide ferry boom now underway. “New terminals, additional routes and faster, smaller boats are driving a new era of water transportation and development,” writes the Times. The article says the boom comes as municipal governments try to address a variety of challenges, such as water transport, to “ease traffic, connect communities and meet housing and commercial development goals.”

“There is no more direct way to connect a resident on the island to the beauty of the Bay than having a ferry service,” said Chris Meany, principal at Wilson Meany, lead developer of the Treasure Island Community Development group. Only an ~8-minute ferry ride from downtown San Francisco, Treasure Island is in the midst of a visionary transformation, set to bring nearly 8,000 new residences, 300 acres of parks, and 22 miles of trails to the Bay Area.

Nearly 1,000 residences are set to be move-in ready on Treasure Island in 2024, with the ferry line serving as a primary connection for residents from the island to the heart of the city.  On the neighboring Yerba Buena Island, a collection of condominiums at The Bristol and newly released Townhomes are already home to residents who enjoy a wealth of trails, parks and amenities less than ten minutes from downtown.

Additionally, the article notes that people aren’t just taking to the water to shorten their daily commutes; they’re making ferry rides part of their daily lives. The Treasure Island ferry already transports thousands every month heading to the island to dine at Mersea or enjoy cocktails at Gold Bar Whiskey Distillery or Treasure Island Wines, soaking in the best San Francisco skyline views in the Bay area
